UK Recruitment Picture November

November has seen a range of reactions to the Autumn budget announcements see here with a broad agreement that there will be an increase to employers costs with the National insurance increases.

Some employers have said how this will impact their hiring decisions in the future and here are a few links to their comments here and here

In summary, while the budget includes measures aimed at supporting key sectors and public services, increased costs for employers and limited relief for smaller businesses have drawn criticism. Companies see opportunities in infrastructure, clean energy, and life sciences but stress the need for careful balancing to ensure sustained economic growth.

On a positive note the employment market seems to have remained relatively resilient showing October new job postings at c706,000.

According to the REC's job report and ONS data, the number of overall job postings in the UK is 1,554,674.

This seems to continue a downward trend, however, the roles most in demand most include IT programmers, software development professionals, and qualified legal and accountancy posts.

The KPMG/REC report indicates declines in both permanent and temporary placements during October also:

The estimated number of vacancies in the UK decreased in August to October 2024, by 35,000 in the quarter to 831,000. Vacancies decreased on the quarter for the 28th consecutive period but are still above pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic levels.

As ever, recruiters will need to think about the disciplines, sectors and geographical reach, to ensure they are offering the services their clients and client prospects require. With a changing landscape, and competing service offers, recruitment is undoubtedly going to need to respond accordingly.
